Sustainability

The UK precast concrete industry acknowledges that it has a responsibility to improve its performance on sustainability. The industry is becoming more resource efficient and environmentally aware through numerous initiatives led by British Precast.

British Precast members demonstrate their commitment to sustainability by signing the Sustainability Charter - a mandatory requirement for membership - which is fully and independently audited. The Precast Sustainability Charter and KPI initiative is part of a wider Concrete Sustainability Strategy initiative, led by the Sustainable Concrete Forum. British Precast has also developed a Precast Resource Efficiency Action Plan (REAP) in 2013 in collaboration with WRAP, MPA BRMCA (British Ready-Mixed Concrete Association) and the BPA (Bricks Development Association) to improve different indicators and aspects linked to resource efficiency.

In 2020, the UK Concrete & Cement industry became the first construction product sector to launch a roadmap to Net Zero Carbon. The new Roadmap offers an ambitious plan to take the sector to a “Beyond Net Zero” status by 2050, using a wide range of decarbonisation technologies and initiatives.
